Many Digital Nomads struggle with staying in shape while traveling. They often find themselves eating unhealthy or not working out at all.

As a digital nomad myself, I’ve found there are numerous tips to help me stay in shape.

The tips in this article will help Digital Nomads stay healthy and fit, no matter where they travel!

Digital nomad fitness tips

When you are moving regularly it can be really hard to get into a good fitness routine.

However, there are some really helpful tips to make sure you can stay in shape even when you are on the road and living in different areas without your usual facilities.

1. Buy compact & transportable fitness equipment

When you are traveling you obviously can’t transport an all in one home gym.

However, compact and transportable fitness equipment doesn’t require a lot of storage space. Digital Nomads can stay in shape by taking the following items with them:

  • Resistance bands
  • Exercise ball
  • Yoga mat
  • Compact equipment like the bodyboss

Sets like these are easy to store as they take up less room than traditional exercise equipment. Digital Nomads can do many exercises with these items that mimic weight training, cardio and yoga.

They are perfect for Digital Nomads on the go!

Tip: Digital Nomads should also make time to exercise outside of their hotel rooms – like climbing stairs in a park or sweating through an outdoor boot camp class.

2. Make use of free trials at gyms

Gyms can be expensive, Digital Nomads need to find ways to stay in shape that won’t break the bank. As gyms are often an unnecessary expense for Digital Nomads it is best not to pay yearly or monthly fees at all unless you plan on frequenting a gym several times per week.

Instead, Digital Nomads should take advantage of free trials at gyms to gain access for a short period of time. You can then get in some workouts before leaving town or explore new places while working out!

Most gyms such as Anytime Fitness offer some sort of free taster session or even a full week, so be sure to check out the local gyms.

3. Use a gym membership that has them in other locations

Digital Nomads often travel to several different locations throughout the year. Digital Nomad fitness doesn’t have to be difficult because Digital Nomads can utilize a membership that has them in other locations! This way, Digital Nomads have access to gyms no matter where they are and will always know there is somewhere close by to work out if needed.

An example of these types of gyms is Anytime Fitness. This gives you access to over 4000 gyms worldwide!

4. Learn calisthenics to stay fit anywhere

Calisthenics is the art of using your body weight to stay in shape. Digital Nomads can learn a few techniques that will help them get fit without any equipment! This way, Digital Nomads can work out anywhere and do not need access to a gym membership or fitness center.

Some great simple calisthenic exercises include:

  • Pushups
  • Plank exercises

  • Lunges

You can find a 6 minute abs workout that you can do anywhere here. There are also a ton of calisthenics YouTube videos like the one below to learn how to perform these workouts.

5. Save money on transport by walking and biking

Instead of taking taxis Digital Nomads can save money by walking or riding a bike. Digital nomads will benefit from the exercise they get when they walk to their destination rather than taking a cab or ride service.

As long as you have a pair of running shoes or some comfortable footwear you’re good to go.

You can also take advantage of bike shares in their destination to save money!

Not only are these great ways to save money, but you get the added benefit of getting some extra exercise in. I’ve always found that I learn much more about a city or area when I walk or cycle around.

You get to see more and find little hidden gems that you won’t always find if you drive or take public transport.

6. Fitness apps can keep you accountable when traveling Digital

Nomads can use fitness apps to keep them accountable while traveling.

Digital nomad fitness doesn’t have to be difficult when Digital Nomads are able to track their progress with these helpful tools!

You can download an app like Stronglifts 5×5, My Fitness Pal or Runkeeper that will allow you to monitor how long you workout, distance run or walked and how many calories burned. You can often use these apps to set goals and track your workouts so you don’t need to manually remember them.

7. YouTube videos become your own free nomad personal trainer
