Comfortable: I'm a smaller girl, about 5'4", hence the reason I got the 40 and not the 55. I had about 10kg+ stuffed into this bag, but it felt like maybe half that weight. Using both the waist and sternum straps significantly make carrying heavier loads much easier. I felt completely comfortable carrying this bag on long walks through airports and cities.
Carry-on Friendly: I was able to carry this bag onto every plane, including the smaller airlines like Ryanair. The attached picture is from a Ryanair flight. I only checked this bag once because it was early AM and I didn't want to deal with it on the plane. I also cannot stress how much I love the back panel that hides the shoulder straps. It made putting the bag in overhead compartments much easier.
Storage Capacity: For what it is, the 40 holds a lot of stuff. I made the mistake of over-packing (like I always do), and this bag still held all my junk. Clothes, flat iron, small shoes, toiletries, you name it. But I had very little room for any souvenirs or new clothes bought on this trip. I often felt regret that I didn't pick up the 55 bag instead. However, I honestly can't wait for my next trip when I can pack smarter. Consider what you will be packing and what you might be bringing back with you when you decide between bag sizes. I definitely think the 40 is sufficient for a longer backpacking trip if you pack smartly, just know you might be a little limited.
Despite some small regret that I didn't get the 55 bag, I definitely love this Fairview 40. Bags like this are a great investment if you plan on backpacking anywhere, especially if those cities are known for cobblestones. It's perfect for smaller/shorter people, and it can hold a good bit of stuff while still being comfortable to wear for long durations. Just honestly consider your needs before settling on the size before you buy.

My main priority is carry on size, and this fits slightly smaller than my old backpack, reducing the likelihood of checking in the first place.
I was also sold by the ability to store the straps away neatly. My old backpack meant I had to carry a way to wrap it if I were taking a budget airline, or risk the straps being caught in transit. This solves that problem without adding bulk, like my improvised solutions had.
The opening is more convenient, and easier to pack than my old half zip style. I also feel like this pockets are well thought out and useful, while not being too over-categorized. I believe this may be changed on newer models, which is part of why I selected this one rather than the osprey I tested at REI.
The support is great and th backpack is more comfortable to wear than my old one. In spite of generally carrying 40+lbs my shoulders felt fine.
All in all, compared to my previous travel backpack this is a wonderful, much needed upgrade that solved many small travel problems. The only downside was retiring my travel companion of my first decade of solo travel, but I look forward to all the memories I’ll be making with this one going forward.
This bag does not disappoint! I fit everything I needed into this pack and a regular-sized backpack and had enough space to bring home a pair of leather high tops and a couple new pieces of clothing. I use packing cubes, which help immensely and allow the internal compression straps to really reduce the volume of my stuff. Without the packing cubes the internal compression straps didn't do nearly as much compressing.
Other things I love about this bag: The dedicated soft pocket at the top, used to stuff my extra long-sleeved shirt or sun glasses; the shoulder strap that could be removed from the mesh stash pocket and clipped onto my bag as I was exiting the plane, never slowing me down and making it easy to juggle the pack; the zip-up back that hides the pack straps while putting the pack through xray machines or while carrying down the narrow airplane aisle; the waist belt that makes carrying heavy loads comfortable, and the carry handles on the top and side which made it easy to shift around.
On the way home my friend's bag broke, so I emptied my second bag to give to her and combined the contents of my second bag INTO THE FAIRVIEW AND IT HELD! You can see in the carpeted airport photo that the bag is stuffed full, but with Osprey's awesome zippers and lifetime warranty I felt safe taking the chance. And it paid off!
I took it to Denver for a weekend trip two weeks later and filled with with everything I possibly wanted to bring, because hey! Domestic travel! The bag ended up being super heavy, but still comfortable to carry. The waist strap and narrow shoulders made a big difference in comfort for this short girl. And I love how flat it stores compared to my other luggage.
I'm a HUGE fan of this bag and will continue to purchase Osprey products from now on! My next back pack for school will for sure be an Osprey. I don't have to be traveling to enjoy a quality bag!
